The phrase originated as a joke in one of the NSFW episodes numbered in the high-50s, but unbeknownst to the chat realm, there was already a community of "knittas" out there known for making knit graffiti as street art. This dates back to 2005 in Houston, Texas. It is also known as "yarn bombing".
